VELscope ® Chicago
VELscope ®, an innovative oral cancer screening tool, is utilized by Benjamin S. Fiss, D.D.S. As a Chicago VELscope specialist, Dr. Fiss offers this simple, potentially life-saving screening to all patients during their annual oral examination. This procedure is just one of the many benefits offered to those who choose Dr. Fiss as their dental provider!
Why screen for oral cancer?
The five-year survival rate of oral cancer patients has remained unchanged for several decades. It is speculated that oral cancer kills one person every hour, 24 hours a day, in North America alone. Like many other cancers, doctors agree that early detection is the key to increasing a patient’s likelihood of oral cancer survival. In fact, studies show that in cases where oral cancer is detected in its early stages, the chance for patient survival climbs to 90 percent.
How VELscope works
A revolutionary hand-held device, VELscope accurately identifies tissue changes at, and below, the oral mucosal surface before they become apparent under the traditional white light examination. The technology used in VELscope is based on the direct visualization of human tissue florescence; therefore, it easily recognizes the changes that occur when abnormal (potentially cancerous) tissue is present.
VELscope is a painless, non-invasive procedure. Dr. Fiss, a leader in Chicago prosthetic dentistry who also specializes in the treatment of gum disease, strongly recommends this procedure to all of his patients.
Dr. Fiss performs a number of cosmetic dentistry procedures as well. View makeovers of several of his patients!
